10 Little Leaves

This is today's afternoon message:

After reading the message and asking someone to underline the "you" and circle the "I" for me, I read them a few pages of a book called "Autumn Leaves", written by Ken Robbins. It's a book that talks about different kinds of leaves and have lots of different pictures of leaves with a variety of sizes and shapes~ It's a very interesting book! I didn't read all of it because it might be a little bit too informational for the kids, and it's difficult to keep their attention for that long.

After reading the book, I taught them the song "10 Little Leaves":

As we sang the song, we held up our fingers to show the numbers~

Then I handed out a page for the students to trace numbers from 1 to 10. It turned out to be a very diffcult task for them, because some of them were not exposed to number-writing before. I didn't wait for them to finish because they started getting impatient when they couldn't do it. I collected them and moved on to our next activity. This reminds me that my host teacher used to say that it's always better to overplan, because if something doesn't work or if students finish early, we'll always have something else for them to do~

I gave each of them a picture of a treetrunk and asked them to colour it. Then I asked them to glue it onto a piece of construction paper. Then I put the little boxes of different coloured "leaves" that they ripped yesterday on the table. I want them to take a leaf, write the number "1" on it, then glue it onto the page. My instruction to them was to count and glue the leaves until they reach 10. Juan was the only student who was actually doing what was asked, because it's too hard for the rest of them. I learned that they're beginners in numbers, so I need to slow down a little bit, and maybe start off with number recognition and teach them to write one number at a time. Now that I know where they are, I'm having a clearer idea of where to bring them and how to bring them there. =)
